THE ISLAND OF MENORCA
  



Both the firm and significance of GIN XORIGUER are difficult to understand without knowing the keys to the country and its people. Menorca is the most isolated and the most seafaring island of the Mare Nostrum. This same isolation limits human contacts, and this explains its enigmatic prehistoric culture.
Menorca was almost unknow until XVII century. The British presence during the XVIII put an end to this isolation for ever and the Menorcan people knew how to use the circumstances to their advantage, undertaking an economic modernisation which began with great nautical and mercantile development.
The port of Mahón, one of the best natural harbours in the Mediterranean, played an important rôle in this development. Mahón became a commercial centre and at the beginning of the XIX century, it was konw throughout the Mediterranean.

 
In the second half of the XIX century, Menorca already had a variety of industries, mainly footwear, silverware and also liquors.
In the mind-XX century, tourism joined the list of stablished industries and the island's agriculture was modernised.
This development took place without generating any impact on the environment.
In ecological terms, Menorca scores high on conservation, and for this strange combination of economy and nature, UNESCO declared the island a BIOSPHERE RESERVE.

The family who owns XORIGUER is proud of its age-old participation in the well-balance development of Menorca, and of its rôle in spreading a philosophy open to all those who are willing and able to appreciate tha Island's natural and human attractions.
